“Give me ideas that will be rejected!”

Participants in the workshop thought I was saying it wrong. So one of them helpfully asked “You mean ideas that won’t be rejected.”

“No. I actually mean ideas you think will be rejected.”

“Rejected by whom?” One of them asked.

“Rejected by you, your boss, your colleagues, the board, the system, the culture.. whatever. Just give me ideas that you think will be rejected.”

“These could be the crazy, dangerous, risky, expensive, impossible kind of ideas?”

“Some of them could be outrageous…”

“No problem. Just go ahead and give me ideas that you think could be rejected.”

“Why did you do that Sridhar?” Prasna* asked me.

“Because some of the best ideas are censored by the participants themselves, even though they may like it. It is also great fun to get a license to do the forbidden.”

“Does that work?”

“Of course it does.”

“Let us say you got a lot of ideas that they think would be rejected. What do you do after that?”

“I then show them a simple step-by-step method to explore these ideas.”

“Tell me more.”

“I ask the participants to sort out all ideas they think are crazy, dangerous, risky, expensive etc. I then ask each one of them to look these ideas and mark ideas they think might have the potential to solve the problem. They have to imagine that somehow they can execute those ideas.”

“What happens then?”

“From that lot of those ideas,  they identify the ones they are excited about. They feel passionate about these ideas and willing to commit time to make those ideas work.”

“What do you achieve in the process?”

“We ensure that they focus their energies on new possibilities. The process is non-threatening. So it works.”

“Do you talk about this in Unlock The Real Power Of Ideation?”

“Yes, I do. I have described the complete process of divergence and convergence, step by step.”

“And you still offer the digital sample of your Chapter 1, free?”

“Yes. All they have to do to get the free digital sample of Chapter 1 is click here. I take care of the rest.”

“Incidentally what is the status of your book? When will it be available?”

“We are starting printing. Books will be available by May 15th in major bookshops and online.”

*Prasna Rao is an unusual friend. He appears every time I start writing something. He is  almost always there when I am writing my blog. He asks questions that are razor sharp and often makes me uncomfortable. He is relentless till I answer his questions in simple,  clear terms. You might find that he is most of the times asking questions that you want to. Therefore he is on your side, while he is putting me in the dock. I call him my Uninvited Coach
