Get 40 ideas instead of 10 – a new iPhone app shows you how

“Why do you need 40 ideas instead of 10?”  asked Prasna*

“In a problem solving situation, some times the initial ideas that we get, may not be good enough to solve the problem. We might need to think differently to arrive at more potent solutions.”

“How do you do that?”

“One way to do that is to explore several possible ideas or solutions. That is where the 40 ideas instead of 10 comes in. I have seen people deftly combining ideas and making it a powerful solution.”

“Tell me more. I am not sure, I understand.”

“Let me give you a simple example. My wife is planning a menu for a brunch she is hosting for our friends. She is keen to make the brunch a memorable experience for our guests. She comes up with a few menu options but she is not happy. She calls our daughter  and gets a few tips. She refers to a few websites and jots down some ideas for desserts. Then she asked me ‘What do you think  I should NOT include in the menu?’.

I gave her my list of what I don’t like. She added those in the list!”

“What did she do finally?”

“She had a final list of 20 dishes. 5 of which she had thought about and 15 that did not occur to her , but would make the brunch a very different and memorable experience for our guests. She has decided on 10 dishes – 3 from her list and 7 which she had not thought of.”

“So what is your point?”

“My point is that if you wish to make a difference, you can’t achieve that by doing the same things you did before. My wife was inspired by Einstein’s  definition for Insanity. ‘INSANITY: Doing the samething over and over again and expecting different results.

“That is  a nice quote. Where did she get that from? From the internet?”

“No. She got that from an iPhone app called TickleMeThink©. She just bought it and was testing it.”

“The app gives you recipes?”

“No, the app helps you to think differently.”

“How does it do that?”

“First it helps you define your problem. In my wife’s case it was “How do I make the brunch a memorable experience for our guests“. Then the app shows you 6 different ways to get different ideas. Two of them most of us do often. Call a friend and search the web. The app makes it easier to do this. In addition the app gives you another 4 different ways.”

“What are those?”

“Action Verbs. The app has a collection of 100 such verbs and it serves the verbs to you at random. One or two of them might trigger off something. It has a collection of Provocative Questions, Interesting Quotes and Evocative Pictures. All of these act as triggers to help you think differently. In each case it has 100 options. In effect you have 400 different triggers, at your finger tips.”

“She got her menu ideas from this app?”

“The app just provided her the stimulus to think differently. My wife thought of all the menu ideas herself.”

“Will you use the app? Who else can find it useful?”

“Of course I will use the app. I think entrepreneurs, businessmen, young managers, designers – any body who wants to make a difference   and do things better, can use this app.”

“How much does it cost? Where can one buy it?”

“It costs US $4.99/Rs 270. You can buy it in the Apple Appstore. Search the Appstore in your iPhone/iPad  for TickleMeThink© – it downloads in a couple of minutes.”

“Good luck. Hope a lot of people benefit from it.”

it is obvious that if you extend your horizons and your sphere of interactions, more and different ideas will come. It is always better to have a bigger basket of ideas than a limited one.
